The CHORIST project is a 3-year project (June 2006 - May 2009), funded by the European Commission (FP6 IST-2005-2.5.12), which addresses Environmental Risk Management in relation to natural hazards and industrial accidents. CHORIST will propose solutions to increase rapidity and effectiveness of interventions following a major natural and/or industrial disaster in order to enhance citizens' safety and communications between rescue actors.

The main objective of the CHORIST project is to develop a system made of the three following subsystems:

  • A risk assessment report subsystem :
A fully integrated, reliable and performing risk assessment report system will process inputs from heterogeneous sensors, disparate legacy monitoring and warning agencies, citizens through emergency call centers... in order to deliver alert messages to authorities.
These alert messages will be accompanied by a picture of the situation which will be constantly updated.
  • A warning message dissemination subsystem :
This subsystem will consist of heterogeneous communication means disseminating warning and alert messages in parallel from authorities to as many citizens as possible within the crisis area and with a limited delay. The selected media channels are:
    1. Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB),
    2. Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB),
    3. GSM networks featuring the cell broadcast technology, and
    4. sirens.
  • A rapidly deployable telecommunication subsystem :
This subsystem will offer secured and interoperable voice and high data-rate services to in-the-field rescue response teams. Two complementary technologies are proposed:- WiMAX based ad-hoc networks and - A TETRA TEDS mobile base station)

OpenAirInteface Involvement

The OpenAirInterface mesh topology development is an important part of SP4.  Specifically, it is the chosen solution for rapidly-deployable broadband MESH networks.
